Why Use Composites for Snowboard Manufacture?
Prepregs and Laminates
> Provide a better working environment than wet lay-up and easier handling.
> Give weight reductions over wet lay-up, as they have a lower resin content.
> Give a more closely defined product, with an exact resin content, making it easy to mass produce skis to an exact specification (thickness and weight).
Polyurethane (PUR) and Honeycombs
> Provide significant weight-savings over wood core, with no loss of stiffness.
> PUR reduces production times (less than 10 minutes from mold preparation to demolding), and reduces the number of components.
> PUR can provide excellent adhesive properties, and an ideal balance of flexibility and stiffness when combined with laminates.
> The use of RIM material makes production extremely quick and provides excellent adhesive properties.
> Rigid foams are less expensive than wood, with no moisture pick-up.
> Rigid foams can incorporate integral design features such as distancing devices, which have to be inserted manually with wood.
> With PUR foams there is very little material wastage, making them more economical than wood or honeycombs.
> Honeycombs combine very low weight with excellent stiffness.
