Hexcel manufactures a complete line of HexForce® woven and non-crimp fabrics from carbon fiber. The range includes traditional fabrics (3K, 6K, 12K, 24K), flat-tow 12K and heatset-unit fabrics, plus non-crimp, multiaxial reinforcements.
Hexcel's carbon fabrics meet the specification requriements of BMS 9-8 as well as other major aerospace manufacturers' specifications for carbon fabric. These fabrics use fibers that are produced under stringently controlled conditions, extensive testing and documentation.
Our commercial carbon fabrics utilise many of the same carbon fibers that have been produced with less extensive testing and documentation. Standard Modulus carbon fiber, supplied to the commercial market, yields typical property values of 530KSI (GPA) for tensile strength and 34 MSI for tensile modulus. Higher performance carbon fabrics with increased tensile and modulus properties are available from Hexcel for special applications.
The carbon fibers we use contain high strenth-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios, carbon fabrics are thermally and electrically conductive and exhibit excellent fatigue resistance. When properly engineered, carbon fabric composites can achieve the strength and stiffness of metals at significant weight savings. Hexcel's carbon fabrics are compatible with various resin systems including epoxy, polyester and vinyl ester resins.
12K fabrics were developed to provide the flexibility of working with lightweight materials while having the improved economics of 12K carbon fibers. The heatset-unit fabric is an advanced unidirectional product that utilises a proprietary fill yarn to stabilize the warp tows. These fabrics provide the performance of tape products with wet resin processing.
Hexcel's carbon non-crimp multiaxial reinforcements provide flexibility of fiber orientation and the benefit of thin plies supplied in a thick reinforcement. This results in time savings for part manufacturing and provides a cost-effective technology.
Hexcel's new NC2 bi-axial, tri-axial and quadri-axial reinforcements technology provides additional advantages for industrial markets. Reinforcements are supplied in ply weights down to 80gsm and are suitable for heavy tows and high modulus fiber. The homogenous filament distribution in the matrix provides improved mechanical properties and enhanced resin flow.
