Duxford is situated just a few miles south of Cambridge, location of the famous University, founded in 1209. The city is frequented every year by thousands of visitors from all over the world. Duxford itself is home to the Imperial War Museum, Europe's top aviation museum, housing over 180 historical aircraft. From a commercial point of view the area enjoys a dynamic business environment and is one of the world's leading centers for IT and biotechnology, with top global companies such as Microsoft having a presence here.
The Duxford site was founded in 1935 by Cambridge University don, Dr Norman De Bruyne. It was here that a small team carried out some pioneering work in the development of new aviation structures and materials and developed the Redux® structural bonded adhesive still used today. Hexcel's Duxford plant manufactures the largest range of products within the organisation: prepregs, adhesives, honeycombs, honeycomb sandwich panels and Engineered Core honeycomb parts.
Around 400 people are employed at Duxford, with 270 working in Production and QA, and the remainder in other functions including Adminstration, Sales and Marketing, R&T, HR, Finance and IT. Duxford is Hexcel's European Center for Research and Technology.
The site operates a five shift system, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
